The frustration I felt after reading “dump Meta” and then clicking the video links in this that brought me to instagram…that I don’t have access to because I dumped Meta 2 years ago. I understand it's entwined in all our lives, but it wasn't always and we don’t have to keep linking back to it or creating parallel systems that are benign now but will very likely follow the same descent into extraction and exploitation. Why bring traffic back to Meta because a couple videos drive home a sentiment about big corporations to boycott when the names of those corps in bullet points works just as well? Lets just do it. A strike and boycott on what we're saying to strike or boycott.

Cuz dopamine is more akin to alcohol than compassion. It doesn't feel good to read. A. List. But a video short keeps you hooked.

I link back to a user on the Meta platform. Remember that there are human lives at stake here. It is all very well to do our best to cause maximum pain to the techbros, but we don’t want to thereby cause pain to the people in the Global South and other areas in the world where this crony-capitalism causes so much harm. If you support Palestinian self-determination, for example, you have to follow them where they are. That is the between-a-rock-and-a-hard-place we find ourselves in. We can’t be absolutist and purist (for ourselves, for our own self-esteem?) about this. We have to do our best to help the situation worldwide.

My fellow Americans, I stand before you tonight to make one thing very clear: we are richer than ever before. You aren’t, of course. But we are. My friends and I are just, like, incredibly rich and only gonna get even richer. So. That’s basically my announcement.

My fellow Americans, despite what everyone else says, we are living in the golden age of America. Not your golden age, though. My golden age. As in: I am very old, and everything I own is either solid gold or gold-plated or painted in gold to make it seem like it’s real gold.

My fellow Americans, the stock market has skyrocketed since I took back the office. It’s been very lucrative for us. Not for you, obviously. Because you didn’t know when things would go up and down. But it’s been very lucrative for us, because we get to decide when things go up and down.

My fellow Americans, when I last spoke to this chamber twelve months ago, I had inherited a country that was on the brink of economic collapse under the weight of all the jobs it kept adding. Too many jobs and you’ll collapse, folks. That’s why we’re getting rid of jobs. No more jobs. Why? Because jobs have to pay people, and that costs money. Instead, we’re gonna do a thing called “AI Does It.” Here’s how it works: Is it your job? AI does it now.

My fellow Americans, we’re no longer going to have to pay taxes. You will, still. You’ll have to pay a lot of taxes, actually. But not me and my guys. We’re done with taxes. We beat taxes. Taxes lost very badly, and now we don’t have to deal with them—you do.

My fellow Americans, we’re bringing money back to our country. We’re using a thing called tariffs. Here’s how it works: You have to pay more for things, and that money becomes the people’s money. (The people are my family and me.)

My fellow Americans, we are going to get even richer over the next three to twelve years of my presidency. And when I say “we,” I’m using the royal we. You understand? Not the grammar thing. The king thing.

My fellow Americans, we’re going to be able to afford a home. Not you—you will never own a home. But we will own many homes. Each of us will own a whole bunch of great big homes, so many that a lot of them will just be empty. That’s our American Dream. Not your dream, clearly. Our dream.

My fellow Americans, a short time ago, we were a dead country. Now we are the hottest country anywhere in the world. The hottest, and getting hotter and hotter until it’s too hot to live here anymore. For you, of course. Too hot for you. I’ve got a great, ice-cold bunker. The best bunker ever. I guess this one isn’t about money. It should be. So, the bunkers are also absolutely covered in gold.

TEMU and AliExpress instrad of Amazon?! No. No. No

Temu is garbage - selling garbage at garbage prices. They have a huge carbon footprint and is powered by inhumane sweatshops. Hell to the eff no. AliExpress is much the same - and both of these websites sell items that are POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS TO USE!!! There is no testing, no regulation, no guardrails. For example, for pet lovers: the automatic litter boxes sold on both of these platforms "for cheap" HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO ACTUALLY KILL CATS. Yes. You read that right - the way the auto-litterbox rotates has no sensor built in and will DECAPITATE an animal - or small kiddo who might be crawling around when you aren't looking. Don't believe me? Look it up - there are tons and tons of youtube videos and since the manufacturers aren't subject to any kind of regulation, true comments are deleted and litigation is impossible. To avoid Amazon, shop local. If you can't get something local, try to buy it directly from the company's website. For things like household items, I recommend checking out GroveCollaberative. It's an Amazon alternative that only carries Eco-friendly household products from cleaning and cooking to skincare.

John Oliver 🇨🇦🇬🇱🇩🇰🇳🇴🇨🇺🇵🇸🇺🇦☮️'s avatar

THANKS! This is really important information. Of course Amazon isn’t much better: anti-union, low wages, long hours, etc. But the critical thing is the lack of regulation and the review manipulation. I had not looked into this. I’ll put the proviso on the article. This is what collaborative work looks like. If we work together, we can refine my article to be as accurate as possible, with as much information, so people can act. I’ll credit you.

Michael T. Babcock's avatar

Amazon pays higher wages than most companies in its bracket and also offers free education to its employees. Yes, Bezos was a total wack job but he's not even at the company anymore.

John Oliver 🇨🇦🇬🇱🇩🇰🇳🇴🇨🇺🇵🇸🇺🇦☮️'s avatar

That is true that they make an effort to keep employees happy. And online-only startups, selling out of their homes, may also do well, but the problem is the downward pressure on the businesses in my community. I want them there. I want to walk in and support the businesses and workers near home.

Michael T. Babcock's avatar

You can want whatever you want. That doesn't make Amazon evil. I want bike lanes instead of cars. That doesn't mean we should boycott all the car companies either. My point was to stick to presently valid facts.

John Oliver 🇨🇦🇬🇱🇩🇰🇳🇴🇨🇺🇵🇸🇺🇦☮️'s avatar

I will continue to give preference to my local people and my local businesses whenever possible. That is what I want to do. People are free to make their own decisions based on their own research. I believe in discussions that reveal information that might help people think about what they want to do. That's the spirit of my post.

Where do you buy gasoline for your car?

Taru Fisher's avatar

Costco or our Native American owned Warrior gas station. New Mexico rocks!

Michael T. Babcock's avatar

Costco doesn't make or refine gasoline. Most of the profits are still going to the upmarket companies.

John Oliver 🇨🇦🇬🇱🇩🇰🇳🇴🇨🇺🇵🇸🇺🇦☮️'s avatar

Costco is not on the boycott list. It is on my Safe Places to Shop List for sure.

Which nuclear or coal plant is providing your electricity?

John Oliver 🇨🇦🇬🇱🇩🇰🇳🇴🇨🇺🇵🇸🇺🇦☮️'s avatar

I assume you are addressing that to all Americans, right? I live in a province of Canada (BC) where approximately 95% of the electricity is generated from hydroelectric sources.

Cameron's avatar

Yes, the control of the overlords is inescapable for most Americans at this point without reverting to pioneer style living. Maybe we can all become amish🧑‍🚀

Michael T. Babcock's avatar

Hydro Ontario, Niagara Falls and Pickering Nuclear.

John Oliver 🇨🇦🇬🇱🇩🇰🇳🇴🇨🇺🇵🇸🇺🇦☮️'s avatar

How can Ontarians boycott Hydro Ontario? You need the energy. The power grid is a whole other topic that requires lobbying governments, right? Wind and solar need to enter the grid in a big way. I’m personally not that familiar with this topic. I’d be happy if you could provide some guidance to the topic!

Also, the gop has convinced many dumb-ass Americans that regulation is bad. A democracy where politicians can be bribed against regulation, is no democracy.

If America survives this bullshit admin, it will need so much rebuilding. Hopefully, for the better.

That’s exactly the kind of compromise I’m thinking of: use their platforms to undermine THEM, just as they use their POWER to undermine my neighbour’s business. I pick my neighbour.

Lisa P. Grantham's avatar

Having just experienced United’s “customer service”, I would say that it is non-existent. It is all AI chatbots that are utterly useless. Lost bag? You file a report with a chatbot requesting delivery. When a couple days go by and your bag doesn’t show up - you cannot get an answer about when the bag will be delivered. Flight delay requiring an overnight stay at a connecting airport? 30 - 40 minutes of hold time on the phone waiting to find out what options a chatbot will give you for a hotel/meals. This was NOT customer service, it was customer abuse. Good reason to boycott United.

John Oliver 🇨🇦🇬🇱🇩🇰🇳🇴🇨🇺🇵🇸🇺🇦☮️'s avatar

Maybe I should ad a section on “poor customer service.” What do you think?

Lisa P. Grantham's avatar

I think you should. United isn’t the only company moving to customer support chat bots. I have yet to receive a satisfactory resolution to an issue from chat bots. I am certain I am not the only person who thinks chat bots are a customer vexation service.

John Oliver 🇨🇦🇬🇱🇩🇰🇳🇴🇨🇺🇵🇸🇺🇦☮️'s avatar

United is already included in the last list, with a long explanation of their abominable minimum wage and excessive CEO pay. I added your comment at the end.

Thank you! I live a pretty simple, minimalist life and began pruning away a little over a year ago. It can be difficult and time consuming to deep dive into all of this but once it’s done, and you continue to research and keep track of more and more like a hobby, it’s really freeing. And educational.

I refuse to put 1 cent of my hard earned cash into the hands / pockets of oligarchs. My personal resistance is permanent boycotting and gently helping others to do the same. Change is hard. Breaking habits is hard. But the psychological strong hold these companies have on people is too scary.

Sheeple.

Anthony Somogyi's avatar

Thank you so much for this list!

And I really appreciate the work and effort involved in identifying & vetting alternatives.

I’m trying to extricate myself from this web of Trump collaborators and MAGA fellow travelers. It’s not easy. They’re in it for the money and power for sure. They have successfully brainwashed & corralled their useful idiots, MAGAt voters and politicians.

I’m struck by how we’ve unwittingly come to shackle ourselves to these companies and hence given them fierce leverage over our politics and our lives.

If there is somewhere to begin to tackle the disparity of wealth killing democracy, to push back at these unaccountable billionaires, this is it!

Brian Zwicker's avatar

I think a very targeted approach would be successful. Pick the worst corporation and target them with protests And boycotts make them feel the pain, take away their profits until they comply, Then move onto the next! They love and exist for their profits After two or three successful boycotts The message will be sent and received after all, they really don’t want a French type of revolution‼️

Kay G's avatar

By “targeting” a corporation - it does gets the message to the BOD, their stockholders, their financial connections, their suppliers and anyone advertising with them much faster.

John Oliver 🇨🇦🇬🇱🇩🇰🇳🇴🇨🇺🇵🇸🇺🇦☮️'s avatar

I totally support targeted efforts. I provide this information for those who want to pick and choose…or be ridiculously through!

Laurie Herington's avatar

I could use an approved company/product list, so we know who to support. Thanks 😉

John Oliver 🇨🇦🇬🇱🇩🇰🇳🇴🇨🇺🇵🇸🇺🇦☮️'s avatar

LOL. It’s easier just to not shop at the businesses listed, than make a list of approved. Yikes! As stated in the first paragraph: A handy app for your phone is https://www.boycat.io/, an “ethical shopping companion.” Scan barcodes while you shop to find out if a product is made by an unethical company, for example, a company located in the West Bank or otherwise complicit with genocide.

Lynn's avatar

Maybe just shop locally - boycott all national retailers if possible. Open air weekend markets fruit and produce stands fresh eggs etc.

Btw license plate readers have been in this neck of the woods for years now - it's creepy - flock cameras everywhere.😥

Taru Fisher's avatar

Try the mobile app, Goods Unite Us, for good recommendations (and ratings) of companies that support Democracy, and those that don’t.

John Oliver 🇨🇦🇬🇱🇩🇰🇳🇴🇨🇺🇵🇸🇺🇦☮️'s avatar

Thanks for this. Very good. Adding it to the article.

dlav's avatar

I use Wirecutter for reviews, etc.

John Oliver 🇨🇦🇬🇱🇩🇰🇳🇴🇨🇺🇵🇸🇺🇦☮️'s avatar

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't know if I have the time to add another section to the article. "Trusted Review sites" would be something to add. But I don't have the time to keep up with any more research!

Stuart Shingler's avatar

The product details section on Amazon often lists the supplier. Use Amazon as a search engine, go to the supplier’s website (not through the Amazon portal though), and buy direct.

Use bookshop.org (bookshop.co.uk or hive.co.uk in the UK) for books. In both cases a portion of what you spend goes to the local independent bookstore of your choice, and based on my own experience the delivery times are comparable to what you get from Amazon. Or go to your nearest independent bookstore and order what you want. They can get you anything in print even if they don’t normally stock it.

Teresa Croswell's avatar

I've found buying directly from the manufacturer is great. Yes, shipping is not free, but I usually get what I'm interested in buying.( I'm not scrolling through what might interest me and sometimes buying and sending back)Sometimes it's cheaper than Amazon,.

OVanna11's avatar

Other than a ‘thank you’ for collecting all these lists in one place, my only comment would be a suggestion; I know we’re all lazy and in a perpetual hurry, and prioritize convenience over almost everything else, but I would encourage ceasing (or at least minimizing) online shopping altogether, no matter which platform. First, do you really really need it? Second, can you find it locally, or maybe make do with buying it used? Or, if it’s something you won’t use often, maybe borrow from a neighbor or a library? The idea of shipping everything from all corners of the planet, along with all the packaging that this entails is TERRIBLE for the environment. Also, supporting your local shops, connecting with friends and neighbors builds, protects, and furthers community. If you remember that you’re paying for someone’s job when you frequent a smaller independent business, those few extra cents you might have to spend on supporting a neighborhood store will likely feel like the right thing to do. 😉

John Oliver 🇨🇦🇬🇱🇩🇰🇳🇴🇨🇺🇵🇸🇺🇦☮️'s avatar

That’s the spirit! Great suggestions! I have a bookmark for two local libraries. So when someone suggests a great book to read, I just log in, search the title and borrow. With living authors or new releases, I usually buy the PDF and read on my iPad. (I’m stuck in the Apple ecosystem professionally and personally). We do what we can.

OVanna11's avatar

Ok, here is a book recommendation for you. Actually, it’s a whole series by C.S. Forrester about the adventures of Horatio Hornblower. He’s a Britsh Navy officer during the Napoleonic years. The BBC started filming his adventures but had to stop because it got too expensive. Fabulous, swashbuckling stuff, though. He’s kind of a 19th century McGiver - sharp as a tack and super resourceful. It doesn’t hurt that he’s also a hell of a specimen to rest your eyes on in the TV version. When I finally finished the last book, it felt as if a visiting, beloved relative had left. An amazing story, and these days a great escape from today’s horrors. Good stuff! 😊👍

Amazing work. Thank you. I’ve been boycotting many here but was sad to see Nutella on the list. Also what about Target (ICE support and anti diversity) and Hobby Lobby (labor and emp healthcare issues)?

I thought the same - Nutella? Nooo…say it ain’t so!

John Oliver 🇨🇦🇬🇱🇩🇰🇳🇴🇨🇺🇵🇸🇺🇦☮️'s avatar

There are options to Nutella. Can’t think of them off the top of my head because I stopped high sugar. Right about Target. How did I miss that?! I don’t know Hobby Lobby because we don’t have that in Canada.

Jo's avatar

Hobby Lobby has been on my boycott list for years, over their refusal to cover birth control for female employees. I don't know if that policy still stands, but even trying it was enough for me to avoid it for life.

Sue's avatar

Thanks. I wasn’t expecting a response. I don’t indulge in Nutella, can’t, but the grands love it.

Re: Nutella alternatives, there are several out there.

Artisana Organics makes one, and I've gotten Chosen Foods Hazelnut Spread before, and it's good.

Doing a search for vegan or organic alternatives will probably bring you more options from smaller companies.

John Oliver 🇨🇦🇬🇱🇩🇰🇳🇴🇨🇺🇵🇸🇺🇦☮️'s avatar

Spotify will stay on the list for a number of reasons, including the now former CEO (he’s still executive chairman) investing heavily in military drone tech, and the company paying peanuts to musicians.
